A
perfect June day for a ride around the Albany countryside. With around
24 bikes at the Amity ranging from Garry’s ‘47 500cc Ariel Red Hunter
to Harley’s Suzuki cruiser and everything in between from Aaron &
Karen’s CBF250 Hondas to Ross’s Harley and four sidecar outfits. And
again over half the bikes were over 25 years old.
Don and Margaret had once again joined us from Katanning, bringing
his Honda 4 down on the back of the trailer to be able to join in the
run - how’s that for enthusiasm. So with Kim Thompson driving the
back-up vehicle we headed off to Elleker for a cuppa.
There
we were joined by a guy on a ‘81 Suzuki Katana who had heard
about the ride and decided to tag along.
After a social interlude we headed off on a winding route to The Gap.
Now I did say at the beginning of the ride riding through the back
roads of Robinson Estate is a bit tricky and I was right as we ended up
by the racetrack, taking a right instead of a left - all good fun isn’t
it ha ha.
Andrew’s battery died on his 250cc BMW en route and so the trailer
was put to use. Kim dropped him off at home so as he could put another
battery in. After more chin-wagging and a quick look at The Gap
stomachs were rumbling and it was time to head to Emu Point for lunch.
Where we originally thought we’d go it was blowing a fair bit, so a
change of plan and we settled in at a more sheltered part of Emu Point.
Andrew rejoined us on a recharged BMW. At least there’s a choice of
food there, BYO, cafe or Squid Shack - I think they were all used.
We then
headed off in a group (more or less) to Peter and Lyn’s
place to view his bikes and cars. We regrouped at the junction of Gull
Rock Road to make sure we were all going to arrive at the right place.
Peter had his three Porsches (dating from the 50’s) lined up on the
lawn, a beautiful Gilera, KTM, 50cc Moto Moroni (in need of
restoration) and 3 Ducatis on display - 750cc GT, 1000cc GT and a
limited edition Paul Smart Sport.
The Porsches had the engines exposed for a look at the Boxer motor and
there was much interest in the bikes and cars, and Peter happily
provided information on his collection. Thanks Peter and Lyn for your
hospitality - much appreciated.
Thanks also to Kim who did a great job as back-up for the day..
